When the investigation consistently takes 10x longer than the fix, the bottleneck is your diagnostic capability, not your operational execution. Pull up the deck from your last operational review. How many slides describe what happened ("throughput was down 4%") versus how many explain why it happened and what to do about it?

This slide tells you Professional Services procurement is slow. It doesn't tell you where in the process the time is being spent. Is it slow approvals? Vendor response time? A three-way match exception loop? Contract review bottleneck?
A process mining view of the same data would show that 41% of Professional Services POs cycle through a contract review loop that adds 12 days — because the threshold for mandatory legal review was set at $10K, and the average Professional Services PO is $14K. The fix is a threshold adjustment, not a "deep-dive."

None of these are wrong. All of them are incomplete.
When your only tool is a dashboard, each team builds their own — scoped to their data, their definitions, their segment of the process. Nobody has the end-to-end view, so nobody can reconcile the numbers.
Process mining works from the event log — the complete, timestamped record of every step in the process. It doesn't start from a metric definition; it starts from what actually happened. The end-to-end cycle time, the segment-level cycle times, and the step-level durations are all derived from the same source of truth.
Count your dashboards. Now count the ones that actually drive decisions.
Most organizations have dashboard sprawl: dozens or hundreds of dashboards built over years, each one created to answer a specific question that seemed important at the time. The maintenance cost is real — data pipelines, refresh schedules, access controls, someone to update the filters when the org structure changes.

If your response to every operational question is "let me build a dashboard for that," you've hit the ceiling. The next level of insight requires a different analytical model — one that understands process flow, not just metric aggregation.

If you've never seen a process map generated from your actual event data, you're operating on assumptions about how work flows through your organization.
